Vetra beer bottling and carbonation: case study

Use of high-purity gases and high-performance gassing systems to achieve high-quality products: in the area of beer bottling and gassing, specialized companies need to equip themselves with technologies that can guarantee the highest standards. This is also and especially true in the case of craft beer, as we will see in this case study.

The client

The Vetra Brewery, thanks to rigorous processes and technologies, as well as the use of high-purity gases and raw materials, produces craft beer with character and is therefore highly regarded. Because of the peculiarities of this beer, it has been dubbed “street beer.”

Its requirement

Vetra’s talented young founders expressed early on a desire to optimize production processes and employ high-purity raw materials. Most especially for their flagship product, Vetra Pils, a beer made using carbon dioxide. For this reason they turned to SIAD.

SIAD’s intervention.

In SIAD, Vetra Brewery has identified the best supplier of food-grade technical gases, related technologies and services.

In the microbrewery sector, SIAD supplies the gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen) essential for the various stages of production. Meaning:

  • Oxygenation of the must in the prefermentation stages by using O2;
  • Gassing of the finished product with CO2 and also used to transfer beer from one container to another, avoiding the risk of product degradation;
  • Prewashing of the bottles, with carbon dioxide, in order to remove the residual air inside the bottles before product placement;
  • Bottling or infilling, at the time of the closure of the bottle, with the aim of preserving the liquid from oxidation phenomena by extending its shelf life.

The results obtained

Vetra beer is among the most popular craft beers. This is evidenced by the recognitions obtained: the gold medal for the best Italian Pilsner, best emerging regional brewery at the “Lombardia Beer Fest” in 2017, the citation among the “Eccellenze” in Slow Food’s Guide to Beers of Italy 2021. SIAD supplies the brewery with all the relevant gases for production. In particular, CO2 essential for maintaining a completely inert atmosphere at every stage of production, as well as in the deaeration of tanks and pipelines. The collaboration continues: SIAD’s R&D department is developing systems that improve oxygen “pick-up” in beer packaging.
